Concrete That Lasts in Catawba County Conditions

The red clay soil throughout Catawba County is one of the toughest challenges for concrete work. Clay expands when it's wet and contracts when it's dry, creating ground movement that cracks poorly prepared slabs. We've seen driveways and patios around Hickory and Newton that cracked within the first year because the base prep was skipped or the concrete mix wasn't right for local conditions.

Proper concrete work in this area requires thorough site preparation — removing organic material, compacting a gravel base, and grading for drainage so water flows away from your foundation and off the slab. It also requires the right concrete mix, proper reinforcement (wire mesh or rebar depending on the application), and control joints placed at the correct intervals.

We handle every phase of concrete work in-house, from excavation and grading to forming, pouring, finishing, and sealing. Whether you need a simple patio slab, a stamped decorative patio, a new driveway, or a garage floor, we deliver concrete work that looks great and lasts for decades.

How It Works

Our Process

1

Site Evaluation & Planning

We assess your site's grading, soil conditions, and drainage patterns. For patios, we discuss size, shape, finish options, and how the slab connects to your home and landscape. For driveways, we evaluate the slope, turning radius, and traffic requirements. You'll know exactly what to expect before we start.

2

Proposal & Scheduling

You receive a written proposal with the full scope, material specifications, finish type, and firm pricing. We coordinate scheduling around weather — concrete work requires specific temperature and moisture conditions for proper curing, and we won't pour in conditions that compromise quality.

3

Prep & Pour

We excavate to the proper depth, install a compacted gravel base, set forms, and place reinforcement. The concrete is poured, screeded, and finished to your specifications — broom finish, smooth trowel, exposed aggregate, or stamped pattern. Control joints are cut at engineered intervals to manage cracking.

4

Curing & Sealing

We protect the fresh concrete during the critical curing period with proper curing compounds or wet curing methods. Once cured, we apply sealant for stamped and decorative finishes to protect the color and surface. We walk through the finished product with you and provide care instructions for long-term durability.

Stamped vs. Standard Concrete: What's the Difference?

Both stamped and standard concrete use the same structural base and reinforcement. The difference is in the finish — and it makes a significant impact on the look and cost of your project. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Stamped Concrete

Pros

  • Mimics the look of natural stone, brick, slate, or pavers at a fraction of the cost
  • Wide range of patterns and colors available
  • Seamless surface with no joints for weeds to grow through
  • Adds significant curb appeal and visual interest
  • Durable and long-lasting when properly sealed

Cons

  • Higher cost than standard concrete (typically 2–3x more per square foot)
  • Requires periodic resealing every 2–3 years to maintain color and protect the surface
  • More difficult and expensive to repair if a section is damaged
  • Can be slippery when wet unless a non-slip additive is applied

Standard Broom-Finish Concrete

Pros

  • Most affordable concrete finish option
  • Broom texture provides good slip resistance
  • Easy to repair or extend in the future
  • Clean, classic appearance that suits any home style
  • Minimal maintenance required

Cons

  • Plain appearance compared to decorative options
  • Limited color options without adding integral color or stain
  • Can show stains from oil, rust, or organic material more readily
  • Less visual impact for areas intended as outdoor living spaces

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard broom-finish concrete patios typically cost $8 to $14 per square foot installed, depending on size and site conditions. Stamped concrete runs $15 to $25+ per square foot. A basic 300-square-foot patio starts around $2,400–$4,200 for standard finish, or $4,500–$7,500 for stamped. We provide exact pricing based on your specific project.
You can walk on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours. Light furniture can be placed after 3 to 5 days. We recommend waiting at least 7 days before driving on a new driveway, and 28 days before parking heavy vehicles on it. Full strength is reached at 28 days. We'll give you specific guidance for your project.
All concrete will eventually develop some cracking — it's the nature of the material. However, proper base preparation, adequate reinforcement, and correctly spaced control joints dramatically reduce the risk and control where cracking occurs. Our control joints are engineered to create planned weak points, so any movement results in clean, controlled cracks within the joints rather than random surface cracks.
Yes, but with precautions. Concrete shouldn't be poured when temperatures are below 40°F or when freezing conditions are expected within 24 hours of the pour. During Catawba County's mild winters, we often have suitable pouring windows. We monitor forecasts closely and will reschedule rather than risk a compromised pour. Quality comes first.
Yes. We pour residential driveways in standard and stamped finishes. Driveways require a thicker slab (typically 5 to 6 inches versus 4 inches for a patio), heavier reinforcement, and additional base preparation to handle vehicle loads. We also handle driveway extensions, turnarounds, and parking pads.

What Our Clients Say

Concrete Reviews

The stamped concrete patio Jeff's team poured is absolutely beautiful. Everyone who comes over asks if it's real stone. He walked us through the pattern and color options, showed us photos of previous work, and the finished product matched exactly what we picked. It's been two years and it still looks fantastic after resealing.
